The 2009 Cuvee Le Bec is a fabulous wine for the money. Wild cherries, flowers and smoke are some of the notes that jump from the glass in this powerful red. Readers won’t find a ton of finesse here, but the wine compensates for that with its superb drinkability. Sweet red fruit and licorice add complexity on the finish in a rustic wine that is ideal for everyday drinking. The Cuvee Le Bec is 45% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 14 % Mourvedre and 7% Counoise. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. This is a fabulous set of wines from Beckmen Vineyards. I was especially impressed with the reds. The estate works almost exclusively with biodynamically farmed fruit, uses indigenous yeasts and (with one exception) has a very refined approach to cooperage.Tel. (805) 688-8664; Fax (805) 688-9983

Simple and sharp in acidity, with jammy raspberry and cherry flavors commingling in an uncomfortable coating of sweet oak. This Rhone-style blend from Beckmen is a disappointment. ——S.H.(11/1/2011)—— 84

One of the finest values in the Central Coast is their Cuvee Le Bec, and the 2007, a blend of 44% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, and 8% Counoise, is one of the two great Cotes du Rhone look-alikes of the Central Coast (the other being the 2007 Cotes de Tablas). This is the type of wine that California can do so well, but rarely does. Part of the reason may be due to the difficulty of trying to convince consumers that a proprietary blend, available at a much lower price, can ultimately be better than some single varietal wines. The super 2007 Cuvee Le Bec is a sexy, delicious concoction of red and black cherries, black currants, pepper, spice box, and fruitcake. Medium to full-bodied and pure with supple tannins and a fleshy, lush personality, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 3-4 years. This winery, which has extensive holdings on one of Santa Ynez’s finest viticulture sites, Purisima Mountain, continues to build on an already impressive resume of wines.
