This has a ripe red berry character with sweet orange peel, chocolate and spice undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, taut and a little chewy with chalky-textured tannins and succulent fruit. Firm, linear finish. Drink or hold.

The Tenuta Bellafonte 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino Collenottolo shows the power of the vintage and the muscle that comes with 36 months of aging in large oak casks. The wine is mostly characterized by high alcohol (measured at 15%) and drying sensations that are reinforced by the tannins of the Sagrantino grape and the oak aging. The wine shows a lot of brawn and volume that could work next to a thick cut of grilled steak. This is a 13,000-bottle release.

This 13,000-bottle release is a great discovery for me, and in fact, I had never heard of this estate before now. Tenuta Bellafonte's 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino Collenottolo brings big intensity and broad shoulders with large swathes of blackberry and tarry fruit. This is a very big wine that needs a pairing with rare steak for sure. Darkly concentrated and packed tight with lots of fruity intensity, Collenottolo offers spice, dried earth and toast, all with good balance. The tannins are well-integrated.
