The 2005 Syrah Columbia Valley is 100% varietal, aged for 15 months in 41% new barrels. Opaque purple, the nose exhibits blue fruits, scorched earth, black pepper, and violets. Ripe and rich, the wine conceals enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years. This is tart, high-acid Syrah, with strong green tea tannins under tangy wild berries. Light streaks of earth and pepper add some interest, but this feels as though it didn’t quite fully ripen, and may not lose its aggressive herbaceousness.——P.G.(11/1/2007)—— 86

Red cherries and black raspberries make up the nose of the 2003 Syrah. An extremely fruit-forward Syrah, this wine bursts on the palate with copious quantities of black raspberries, dark cherries, and cassis that are rendered more complex thanks to underlying hints of leather and horse sweat.
