The Syrah/Viognier 2006 (just 2% of the latter) is simply outstanding, possessing a lovely pure nose of plum, kirsch, rose petals and a touch of eau-de-vie, opulent and refined. The palate is beautifully balanced, surfeit with finesse and poise with notes of macerated black cherries, spice, blueberry and a touch of game. Very focused and pure on the silky finish - this is a -complete- wine, one that rivals some of the best Northern Rhone.
Since acquiring their initial 6-hectare parcel of vines in Roys Hill in Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay in 1997, Bilancia (so-called as both proprietors Lorraine Leheny and Warren Gibson are both Librans), have quietly established themselves as one of the region's premium producers, with some exceptional Syrah and Pinot Gris.
