The 2003 Pesquera Gran Reserva has a liqueur-like bouquet of blackberry and black cherry that jumps from the glass. On the palate it reveals a slightly roasted character (likely from the searing hot vintage) dense fruit, savory, incipiently complex flavors, and a lengthy finish. Drink it through 2023. The new Tinto Pesquera releases are all outstanding.

This is rich and thick-textured, with firm tannins underlying ripe flavors of plums, raisins, coffee and tobacco. It's balanced, but lacks clarity, and the earthy notes overshadow the fruit. The 1995 Gran Reserva possesses a deep ruby/garnet/plum color as well as a sweet nose of earth, licorice, black fruits, underbrush, and spicy new oak. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, with refreshing acidity, and outstanding depth, ripeness, and complexity. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
