The 2003 Arviza Reserva is an identical blend which spent 18 months in oak. More deeply colored but a bit reticent aromatically, on the palate it is medium-bodied, firm, structured and moderately long. The 2001 Hidalgo-Arviza Reserva is clearly meant to be more serious but the additional oak treatment has muted the aromatics slightly and the fruit is more compressed. Nervertheless, there is plenty to like here. There is more than ample fruit and the wine’s structure suggests that it should continue to evolve for several years.
