The entry-level Albari?o 2016 La Val is a fruit driven varietal bottled young and unoaked. It's very similar to the other bottlings from the same year, fruit driven and straightforward with a soft palate, integrated acidity and a sweet finish. 360,000 bottles produced.

The regular 2014 La Val wants to show freshness Albari?o and a fruit-driven profile, and that's what it is, with aromas of white fruit and a balanced palate. Accessible and pretty straightforward. 230,000 bottles produced.

Albarino has taken America by storm as demonstrated by this dry, white, perfumed, fruity 2013 Albarino from Spain’s Galicia region. Much of the production of this enormously popular white wine is controlled by coops, but Bodegas La Val owns over 150 acres of Albarino vines. It is located further inland than some of the other well-known Albarino vineyards. Aged on its lees until bottling in late spring, this delightful dry, crisp white (100% estate fruit) reveals fresh notes of underripe apricots, orange skins and honeyed melons. One of the first to estate bottle in Rias Baixas, Bodegas La Val has benefitted from the increasing worldwide interest in these fragrant, flowery, fruit-driven Spanish whites made from the indigenous varietal, Albarino. Made from 20+-year-old vines, this 2012 Albarino was fermented in stainless steel and aged on its lees until bottling. Elegant aromas of peach skin, honeyed apricot and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dry, fresh, nicely textured, light to medium-bodied white. It is a perfect foil for all types of seafood and lighter poultry dishes. Drink it over the next year. Doug Polaner is his name, and high quality wines in all price ranges is his game. The 2011 La Val Albarino is a selection of the best grapes in the estate’s three vineyards. It undergoes a 48-hour pressing and is fermented in stainless steel with no lees aging or malolactic. It offers faint grass clipping notes on the nose that is a little one-dimensional. The palate is simple and primal, but is missing some complexity on the primal finish. Drink now-2015. I visited Bodegas La Val, which lies in close proximity to the River Mino and the Spain/Portugual border. It was one of the appellation’s first sizeable estates – in fact, the original owner at the time was decried as “crazy” when he purchased his first of three vineyards, some 35 hectares that is still considerable to this day.
