I found very oaky aromas in the nose of the 2020 Altos de Luzón Monastrell, a ripe red at 14.5% but with good freshness and balance. It matured in barrel for 12 months, but that marked the wine's aromas and flavors. For fans of ripe and oaky Monastrell.

Currant and blackberry flavors mingle with licorice, iron and tarry notes in this firm red. A bit angular, but the floral finish is clean and pretty. Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. After quite a gap, I tasted the 2016 Altos de Luzón, one of their first wines in 2000. It's a blend of 50% Monastrell and equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo that matured in barrique for one year. It has a sweet, creamy and spicy nose, quite influenced by the élevage, with plenty of oak-related flavors and a dry finish. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.

This sturdy red has a four-square structure of big tannins and balsamic acidity. Flavors of ripe plum, dried fig, licorice and espresso mingle, with a clean finish. A bit rustic, but balanced.
