The 2009 Castillo de Almansa Reserva is a blend of 60% Monstrell, 20% Garnacha and 20% Tempranillo that is hand- and machine-harvested, and sees 12 months in fine grain American oak (new and second fill). It has a simple raisin, fig and black currant nose that needs a little more focus and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins. The fruit is clean with a good tannic structure, although it comes across as very primal and simple towards the finish. Still, this is satisfactory wine for the price. Drink now-2015.
