The 2008 Tamaral Reserva comes from 40- to100-year-old vines in Pesquera and Banos de Valdearado and sees 24 months in new and used oak. It has a tightly wound bouquet that unfurls to off black cherries, blueberry and a touch of iodine that remains controlled and focused. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, rounded, velvety tannins on the entry. It retains decent balance and offers a seductive, satin-like texture, while the finish is composed and primal, with luscious creme de cassis and blueberry jam notes. Drink 2013-2020.
Founded in 1997 in Penafiel, Bodegas y Vinedos Tamaral is a small family run winery. Winemakers Nicola Tucci and Francisco J. Gallego farm around 50 hectares and I found their wines commendable, with just the La Mira showing a slight imbalance between fruit and oak.
