The 2011 White is a bit more focused than the 2010, partly because of the addition of Petit Manseng and Marsanne to the blend. Floral-infused honey, nectarines, peaches and crushed rocks wrap around the long, nuanced finish. The 2011 White is 66% Roussanne, 14% Viognier, 14% Petit Manseng and 6% Marsanne. The handful of 2011s I tasted were delicate, perfumed and quite pretty, but with less depth and structure than either the 2009s or the 2010s. The 2009 White (Roussanne/Viognier) was aged in a combination of cement and barrel, but saw extended contact with the skins, which has given the wine an intense but cloudy color. The only white wine offering, the 2008 Roussanne/Viognier (65% and 35% respectively), is the least impressive effort in this portfolio. While it is a flowery, orange marmalade, and nectarine-scented and flavored blend, it reveals an oily, somewhat heavy style that could use more uplift and freshness. Nevertheless, there is a lot of intensity to this wine. Moreover, it would work well paired with an intense poultry or darker, more oily fish dish. Drink it over the next several years. Booker Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the top sites in the Paso Robles region for Rhone varietals. This 40-acre vineyard is planted in limestone soils, just west of Highway 101, and every wine I have tasted since their debut 2005 vintage has been unapologetically Californian in flavor, exuberance, personality, and soul. The current and upcoming releases continue Booker’s Midas touch with these varietals. The 2007 white, a blend of 65% Roussanne and 35% Viognier, is another excellent example of how well this blend works from select Central Coast sites. A light gold/green-hued color is accompanied by aromas of apricots, white peaches, honeysuckle, and lychee nuts. With a terrific texture, full-bodied richness, and a style reminiscent of some of the brilliant whites made by Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non, this beautiful effort can be enjoyed over the next several years.Booker Vineyard, a 40-acre vineyard planted on limestone soils just west of Highway 101, continues to strut its stuff after its impressive debut in 2005.
