Sporting a dark color and rich concentration, the 2011 Barolo Coste di Rose exhibits sure footing and broad shoulders. Despite its larger size, the wine carries itself with grace and poise. You get some of those aromas of raisin and tar that are characteristics of the vintage, but you also get red rose and pungent red berry fruit to keep the balance. Only 4,500 bottles were produced.

The 2010 Barolo Coste di Rose adds an extra layer of complexity (compared to the base 2010 Barolo) that comes off as exotic spice or crushed cardamom with pretty herbal accents of wild sage or rosemary. Dry tannins segue to an elegant mouthfeel that is both graceful and fine. This vintage has the bones for long cellar aging. Drink: 2017-2028. No known importer.

This shows less intensity than displayed in past vintages. Instead of brawn and power, this is elegant and polished, with aromas of dried fruit, crushed stone and dried herb. — (9/1/2012) —90
