Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tete du Clos from Camille Giroud has a more reserved and austere bouquet than its peers despite rigorous coaxing. The palate is well balanced, quite tart and slightly bitter on the entry, though it does not follow it up with the requisite complexity or depth to merit a higher score. That said, I suspect it will reward those who give it another couple of years in bottle.

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tete du Clos has a generous bouquet with scents of apricot blossom, almond and a touch of walnut, veering a little towards Meursault in style. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity. This feels lively in the mouth and demonstrates a natural sense of poise, offering plenty of detail towards the steely finish. This has plenty to offer over the next 12-15 years. Tasted May 2016.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chassagne Montrachet Tête du Clos 1er Cru from winemaker David Croix offers the finest aromatics of several Chassagnes that I tasted, blessed with superb delineation and precision: mineral tones, hints of jasmine and yellow flowers coming through - an absolute delight. The palate is fresh and vibrant - a killer line of acidity and well integrated oak broadening out the finish without detracting for its tension and poise. This is a very well crafted Chassagne-Montrachet that should be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chassagne-Montrachet Tête du Clos 1er Cru 2011 has a delineated bouquet: very subtle but intense with delicate aromas of freshly sliced pear, white peach and citrus lemon, full of tension and poise and yet it does not have to exert as much effort as Jean-No?l Gagnard’s Petits Clos. This is more sanguine. The palate is extremely well balanced with a very pleasant reductive note that is reminiscent of Coche-Dury (yep…that good!) It builds gloriously in the mouth, the finish spicy and convincing. Excellent.

The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Tete du Clos (from the upper part of Morgeots) is a vivid, multi-dimensional wine that bursts onto the palate with broad, expansive layers of fruit. It shows great richness while maintaining considerable nuance as well as polish. This is a gorgeous, refined white from Camille Giroud. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted at Camille Giroud. While the top selections are hugely successful, readers should also pay attention to the village wines, which deliver plenty of character at accessible prices. Most of the wines are made from purchased fruit sourced from growers with whom the winery has long term relationships. The harvest took place between the 8th and 15th of September. Sugar levels were higher than in 2005. Macerations were on the long side in 2009, and ranged from 19-24 days versus the more typical 12-17. Most of the wines were made from 100% destemmed fruit, although a few selections – the Corton-Rognets and Chambertin in particular – saw some whole bunches. Malos were completed between February and April 2010 and the wines were not racked during their aging. Bottling began just after harvest 2010 for some of the early maturing reds, but most of the wines were still in barrel at the time of my visit in late February, with the exception of the Grands Crus, most of which had been racked into steel and were awaiting bottling towards the end of March. I also had a chance to taste some 2009 whites. All of the Camille Giroud 2009 whites were bottled in January 2011.
