The top-shelf 2018 Campo alla Sughera is 70% Petit Verdot and 30% Cabernet Franc (aged in barrique for two years). The entire line of wines at this estate has taken a jump up in brightness and intensity. This pretty vintage is a perfect example. Balanced aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, spice, earth, forest, grilled herb and perfumed tea leaf lift delicately from the bouquet. This is a full-bodied red with a streamlined, elegant close and polished tannins. Production is 5,000 bottles plus some larger formats too.

The 2015 Campo alla Sughera is a truly bold and wide-shouldered wine. The blend is equal parts Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and you can surely anticipate the full-throttle power of both these grapes. The bouquet is especially generous and rich with dried blackberry and wild plum framed by smoke, tar and burning embers. It ages in barrique for two years. The mouthfeel is full-bodied, but it carries its weight with smoothness and elegance. Still, this steak-ready Tuscan red captures the sunny personality of the 2015 vintage for sure. Some 3,000 bottles were made.

Made with Petit Verdot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%), the 2013 Campo Alla Sughera is a richly layered expression that is tight and neatly compact at the same time. The bouquet is not overly intense and in fact I think it could use another year or two to further develop and open. The mouthfeel shows power and determination, yet it also offers an enormously silky quality that soothes the palate. This is a nicely constructed red blend that should meet the test of time (at least for the next decade). Only 3,000 bottles were produced.

The IGT Toscana 2012 Campo Alla Sughera represents a hearty blend of 70% Petit Verdot and 30% Cabernet Franc. This is a thick and deeply concentrated red wine with layers of dark fruit and preserved cherry followed by soft spice and leather. The tannins are soft and integrated. There is a point of sourness on the finish. After two years of aging in oak, the wine is set aside for an additional two years in bottle to complete its integration. Only 3,000 bottles were made.

The 2011 Campo Alla Sughera will appeal to those who appreciate extra muscle and push-back from their super dark and concentrated red wines. It will appeal less to those who seek delicate nuances and understated elegance. If you are in the mood for brawn and sheer power, this IGT Toscana offers dark aromas of barbecue smoke, leather, dried figs and blackberry compote.
