The 2019 Two Acres is a field blend of Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Peloursin, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet from vines planted in 1910. It was made with 33% whole cluster and aged 15 months in 17% new French oak. Medium ruby in color, it has bright aromas of red and black cherries, dried wildflowers, thyme and minerally undertones. The palate offers a great balance of fresh, juicy fruit with mineral and earthy character, and it finishes uplifted. 275 cases were made.

The 2017 Two Acres is a blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Syrah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet. Medium ruby-purple, it has notions of cured meats, desiccated lilac, black berries, pepper, woodsmoke and blue fruits with touches of garrigue and dried citrus peel. Medium-bodied, it's earthy and sanguine in the mouth with a firm, chewy frame and good freshness, finishing pleasantly rustic. 309 cases produced.

A blend of 80% Mourvèdre with 20% other mixed black varieties, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Two Acres gives up subtle earth and tar aromas with hints of smoked meats and chargrill over a core of fresh blackberries and black plums. Full-bodied, taut and muscular, it has a solid frame of chewy tannins and great freshness, finishing long and earthy. 191 cases were made.

I’ll just briefly summarize the 2014s. It was the earliest vintage ever for Mike Officer and probably he’ll beat that early harvest record in 2015. In this case, he was finished by October 6, which was a first, and it will be interesting to see if he eclipses that in 2015, which was looking even earlier. The production levels were relatively abundant for Mike Officer and the wines fruit-forward, although softer and less reserved than some of the 2013s. While not quite as opaque in color, they are loaded with fruit, supple and luscious. The only white wine, the Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard, makes an appearance in 2014, and it’s another beauty – it’s crisp and the only wine in bottle. The other wines all stood out and will, no doubt, merit outstanding ratings across the board for their intensity, richness, and full-bodied power. If you already know what Mike Officer does, and the style of his wines, you won’t be disappointed in his 2014s. You may even like them as much as any vintage, given the fact that this year shows a lot of up-front fruit and charm.

One of my favorite wines from Officer is the 2013 Two Acres, an intriguing blend dominated by Mourvèdre (72%), and the rest Carignan, Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Mike Officer has always done an amazing job with this tiny two-acre vineyard planted in 1910, which he calls the products from “l(fā)ip-smacking delicious.” I can’t really improve upon that description. Using indigenous yeast fermentation and only about 50% new oak, the 2013 Two Acres is a remarkably elegant, Mediterranean-styled wine that is reminiscent of a stylish Chateauneuf du Pape, for lack of a better comparison. The wine has loads of raspberry fruit, vague hints of spice box, pepper and maybe beef, but the floweriness and sweet purity (the wine is totally dry, but the 15% alcohol adds lots of glycerin to the texture) makes for a seductive wine. It is luscious and best drunk over the next 5-7 years.
