Another wine for readers who suffer from clogged arteries is the massive, super-tannic, phenomenally concentrated 2009 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard. Made from Napa Valley fruit and tipping the scales at 16% alcohol, this wine possesses a boatload of glycerin and concentration. It is a 30-40-year wine given the glacial pace at which Petite Sirah evolves. A dense purple color is accompanied by scents of graphite, blueberry liqueur and ink as well as hints of oak and crushed rocks. The wine is so concentrated, full-bodied and intense that it is nearly painful to taste. In spite of the stratospheric level of the tannins, they are remarkably sweet and well-integrated. Forget this one for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3-4 decades. It is amazing to think that fifteen years ago no one had ever heard of Carlisle Winery and Vineyards or Mike Officer. Moreover, what Officer has done to preserve old vine Zinfandel vineyards in Sonoma is nothing short of astonishing. Add to that success story his sensational line-up of Syrahs, Petite Sirahs and Rhone Ranger blends and it is undeniable that this man and his winery are at the top of their game. These are artisanal, world-class reds that remain among California's most fairly priced high quality wines. Following is a look at the 2008s from bottle as well as a preview of the charming, seductive 2009s. Mike Officer says 2009 is a strong year for his wines, but since he has done nearly everything right, it is hard for me to say his 2009s are better than previous vintages. Certainly he will not have much production in 2010 given all the issues Zinfandel vineyards had in that year. Carlisle’s Petite Sirahs are treated like this powerful, but under-appreciated varietal should be. From very old vines, the 2007 Petite Sirah Palisade Vineyard is an amazing example of this varietal that should age for 30+ years. Blueberry, blackberry, camphor, licorice, incense, and graphite notes are followed by a wine with massive concentration and density as well as tremendous purity and depth. Although surprisingly accessible (a characteristic of this vintage), it will unquestionably last for three decades.. Mike Officer is quickly rising to the top of the qualitative pyramid when it comes to Zinfandel, and, more recently, Petite Sirah and Syrah. Working from old vine Zinfandel vineyards in Dry Creek, Sonoma, and Russian River, he is giving some of Napa’s top-notch Zinfandel producers, such as Biale and Turley, a run for their money. Starting as a home winemaker in 1998, Officer is now zeroing in on a 5,000 case production of wines that are poster children for hedonism and exuberant joy. Carlisle’s 2007s reveal that vintage’s luscious fruit. Syrah should be selling better in the marketplace than it does. Perhaps consumers are confused by the ocean of cheap Shiraz from Australia, and fail to recognize how much quality California Syrah offers. Carlisle’s Syrahs are all noteworthy efforts.
