A release of about 5,000 bottles, the Casa d'Ambra 2017 Ischia Rosso Dedicato a Mario d'Ambra is a wine with which I was not previously familiar. This is a remarkable red blend of the indigenous grapes Guarnaccia and Per'e Palummo (a mouthful, in a good way) with berry and black cherry backed by punchy tones of raw fruit and plum. The wine shows a darker side with tar and licorice that are interwoven into the tight fabric of this fascinating red. The tannins and the acidity are balanced out by the freshness of the fruit, making your mouth water for some cannelloni alla napoletana.
