The 2019 Il Liris Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (68%), Shiraz (20%) and Malbec (12%), all sourced form Frankland River. The 2019 season was a cool one, typified by "notably cooler nights." On the nose, it is notably oaky, with plenty of that oak flowing through into the mouth as well. In terms of oak during the maturation process, the Il Liris is a barrel selection; circa 70% of the selected barrels were new French oak and the balance one year old. It was matured then for 12 months prior to all components being blended and returned to a single 1,800-liter barrel. While this is concentrated and polished, I have never understood the Shiraz addition, as the Cabernet and Malbec do perfectly well together from Frankland River. As it stands, the tannins are very firm and, in my opinion, get in the way of the supple flow of red fruit. It will be long lived, for sure. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under crystal Vinlok.
