Taut and silky, the medium-bodied 2020 Saint Joseph strikes a fine balance between structure and generosity. Hints of cedar (it's aged in one-third new barriques) and cherries perform a similar balancing act on the nose, while the finish lingers easily on the tongue.

Notes of asphalt, black cherries and black olives appear on the nose of the medium-bodied 2019 Saint Joseph from the regional cooperative cellar. It's not the biggest, most concentrated or most complex wine from the appellation, but it's a solid bistro red to enjoy over the next few years.

This cooperative has a good track record of turning out value-priced reds from the St.-Joseph appellation. Given the explosively high prices encountered for most northern Rhones, it is rewarding to find wines of this quality at such reasonable prices. A light effort is the 1998 St.-Joseph, a dark ruby-colored, sweet smelling, elegant wine with plenty of black raspberry and cherry fruit, medium body, and a soft finish. This excellent cooperative specializes in St.-Joseph. The 1995 St.-Joseph exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a clean, cassis-scented nose, elegant, medium-bodied flavors, and sweet tannin. It should be drunk over the next 3-5 years.
