The 2015 Coevo is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot and is one of the top-shelf wines from Famiglia Cecchi. This is a beautiful edition of the blended Tuscan red that doles out thick layers of black fruit, spice, tar and grilled herb. It ages in French oak (225- and 500-liter barrels) for 18 months. The balance is great, and the wine offers both richness and a good spot of freshness on the medium to full-bodied finish. This wine tastes great straight out of the gate. Serve it with a platter of Pecorino Toscano wedges, little chunks of Parimggiano Reggiano and some schiacciata (sort of like a Tuscan version of focaccia, with lots of olive oil and rosemary). Some 11,000 bottles were made.

Cecchi's top-shelf 2013 Coevo is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This rich Tuscan blend is aged in oak (225- and 500-liter barrels) for up to 18 months. The effect is impenetrable, potent and textured. The wine's ample structure is presented with a point of astringency that needs to relax with more bottle aging. The quality of the bouquet is thick and robust with black fruit, tobacco and bitter chocolate. Some 11,000 bottles were produced.

The 2011 Coevo (50-50 Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) offers a full bouquet of floral aromas that come as a big surprise. Jasmine, rose petal and spicy orange blossom are folded within. Forest floor, white mushroom and balsam herb add to the aromatic momentum of the wine. The youthful tannins need time to soften.

Cecchi’s most ambitious project, the 2010 Coevo sees fruit from the Villa Cerna estate in Castellina in Chianti blended with fruit from the Val delle Rose estate in arid Maremma. The composition for this trans-Tuscany assembly is Sangiovese (50%) with decreasing parts Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It bursts from the glass with dark, meaty intensity and shows layers of dried blackberry, smoked bacon and dark spice. The tannins are soft and chewy. A little bottle evolution would serve Coevo well. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Cecchi is a go-to estate for good value from the heart of Chianti Classico. As I have observed this estate over the years, I have been impressed by the avid experimentation and the enthusiastic manner in which new products and territories (spanning from Maremma to Montefalco) have been added to the Cecchi brand.
