The 2009 Syrah Califa is darker, richer and more powerful than the straight bottling. It also possesses greater varietal definition in its aromas and flavors. This is a decidedly rich, opulent Syrah with more than enough stuffing to drink nicely for a number of years. The Califa is a selection of the estate’s four best barrels of Syrah. The 2008 Syrah Califa is gorgeous. Expressive dark fruit, licorice and tar all flow effortlessly from this large-scaled wine. Harmony, complexity, and nuance as well as sweet tannin are found in the 2003 Califa-Syrah Chamisal Vineyard. Its dense blue/purple color is followed by a deep, full-bodied, layered, impressively-endowed Syrah with a sweet, smoky bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberries, road tar, and flowers.
