In spite of the misplaced unpopularity of Merlot among American wine consumers, Chappellet’s 2004 Merlot is an outstanding example of this varietal. Beautiful flowery, plum, blueberry, and black cherry flavors cascade over the palate with not a hard edge to be found. Medium to full-bodied, with complex aromatics, sweet tannin, and a long finish, this opulent, Pomerol-like red should be consumed over the next 10-12 years.
