One of the star estates in the Languedoc-Roussillon's up and coming Pic St.-Loup appellation, Chateau de Cazeneuve's five offerings deliver plenty of flavor and character. The 1996 Pic St.-Loup Grand Cuvee blanc (80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc) tastes like a down-sized version of Chateau Beaucastel's compelling Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. While its smoke and toasty oak could be less intrusive, the wine exhibits dense, ripe fruit, a soft, succulent texture, and a chewy finish. It should drink well for 1-2 years. If less oak were present, this wine would merit a higher score. Importer: a Jeffrey Davies Signature Selection, West Nyack, NY; tel. (845) 353-8767
