This property makes a serious cuvee of red wine. This wine, a 100% Syrah from the estate's oldest vines, which average nearly 40 years in age. It is aged entirely in oak barrels, of which one-half are new, and bottled unfiltered. This wine might be called the Hermitage of Provence, given its size, richness, and intensity. The opaque, dense dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of smoke, licorice, cassis, and roasted herbs. Those enticing smells are followed by a dense, chewy, wonderfully layered, medium to full-bodied wine with no hard edges. Lushness and low acidity add to the fatness and plumpness of this fruity wine. A pleasing, full-flavored offering that has soaked up its oak-aging, it should drink well for 6-7 years.
Mourgues du Gres is one of the top estates of the Costieres de Nimes, an appellation south of Chateauneuf du Pape and Tavel, just north of the Languedoc-Roussillon.
