This is a strong effort from the Cotes de Castillon's famed proprietor Gerard Perse. A substantial blend of 70% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it was made from low yields (a hallmark of 2008, and no doubt one of the explanations for the wines- density and concentration). This supple-textured 2008 displays terrific blackberry and cassis fruit, hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, and earth, and sweet tannins. A consumer-friendly offering to enjoy over the next 5-6 years, it may be the finest Clos l-Eglise yet made under Perse's ownership.
