Despite including a higher proportion of Grenache (78%, with 16% Mourvèdre and 6% Syrah), the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Grande Reserve is substantially darker-hued than the estate's traditional cuvée. Sourced from a largely sandy section of La Crau (Nord), it's also less aromatic and more tarry, dense and tannic. Yet, it seems to have the requisite black cherries and plums to pull it all together over the medium term. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated, velvety and long, this should blossom with several years of cellaring, then drink well for at least a decade.
