Paolo Leo is an exciting wine project that has burst onto the Southern Italian wine scene in recent years. The 2016 Negroamaro Orfeo offers a balanced interpretation of this native grape with bright cherry and cassis aromas that are carefully layered with moist earth, leather and tobacco. This wine ages in French and American oak for 12 months, and you feel the lasting imprint of that extra spice. Fruit is sourced from 50-year-old alberello-trained vines (or goblet pruned) that are trimmed very tightly, thus restricting the number of buds and ensuing clusters. This makes for richly concentrated flavors and a velvety mouthfeel. It's a go-to grilled-steak wine that offers terrific value to boot.

Paolo Leo's 2014 Negroamaro Orfeo adopts a more elaborate approach to the grape whose name translates as "black-bitter" from Italian. Traditionally farmed in Puglia, Negroamaro was traditionally vinified according to simple winemaking techniques in order to maintain the grape's distinctive primary fruit aromas. This producer based in the Brindisi provence opts instead for long maceration times (up to 15 days) and ages the wine in both French and American oak. The wine is sweet and spicy with generous layers of jammy black fruit on prime display. Its consistency is broad and fleshy.

The 2011 Negroamaro Orfeo shows surprising complexity and sophistication considering the heat of the 2011 vintage. Negroamaro is vinified in stainless steel and transferred to French barrique for 12 months. The wine shows a dark garnet color with autumnal tones of wet earth, dried tobacco, spice and candied fruit. There is a touch of blackberry sweetness on the close, but the wine ends with long and very pleasing tobacco flavors. Orfeo is a savory, earthy expression of Negroamaro that should drink well for the next two years.
