A release of roughly 3,500 bottles, the Conte d'Attimis-Maniago 2012 Friuli Colli Orientali Tazzelenghe is made with a little-known indigenous grape named Tacelenghe in the local dialect that means "cuts your tongue." The wine shows bright acidity, but that freshness adds positively to the overall effect. This dark garnet red wine opens to a mid-weight palate with moderate phenolic richness. The wine strives for silkiness and polish, with slightly evolved notes of dried cherry, cassis and dried mint. There is some astringency to the tannins, although the fruit is air-dried after harvest to soften it up. Those tight tannins and the acidity are what give the grape its name.
