The 2006 Albarino de Fefinanes III Ano has distant scents of the sea on the nose (seaweed and a touch of oyster shell). The palate shows very good weight on the entry. It has a very phenolic and lees character as one would expect, although I am just looking for a little more tension and edginess towards the finish. Drink now-2017. I visited the historic Bodegas del Palacio de Fefinanes in the coastal town of Cambados on two occasions, once with my family and then professionally, just a few weeks later. The winery overlooks the cobbled square and caters to thousands of tourists each year. Although the buildings date back to around 1620, winemaking commenced in 1904 and the wine registered as a trademark in 1928. Their vineyards are located in the Salnes Valley. “I am looking for a very classic wine that emphasizes the Albarino variety,” said proprietor Juan Gil de Araujo Gonzales de Careaga. “It must have very good acidity and fruity flavors: apple, citrus fruit and so on. I love the minerality of this area, from the granitic soils. I am looking for persistency in the mouth.” This was an impressive set of wines and older vintages testified their aging propensity.Importer: Kysela Pere & Fils, Winchester, VA; tel.
