The 2018 Syrah Reserva Cem Reis (Herdade da Maroteira) was aged for 16 months in an equal mixture of new French and American oak. It comes in at 15.8% alcohol. Tightly wound and solid in the mid-palate, this jammy Syrah compensates a bit for its flamboyance with its fine structure. Plus, the fruit is reasonably expressive, with some hints of that Syrah game, even if the fruit is often covered over by the new wood. This is not a subtle wine on any front. In other words, power, big fruit, lots of vanilla. It does the blockbuster style pretty well, though, and it has some room to improve in the cellar. For the moment, this seems to be one of the winery's 2018s that hangs well with some recent vintages. We'll be a bit conservative just now, though, until this demonstrates that it can hold its balance as it ages. It will certainly be a wine that makes a lot of folks go "wow" at tastings, though. Not imported, this runs around 50 euros in Portugal.
