A supple and dark-fruited red with black plums, mulberries and chocolate on the nose. Touch of hazelnut and tobacco. Full-bodied, subtly smoky, with polished tannins and a creamy texture. Drink or hold.

Swirls of black raspberry ice cream and dark chocolate combine in Vignon's 2019 Gigondas, a blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre from numerous small parcels dotted around the appellation. Matured in a large wooden vat, there's no apparent oak aromas or flavors, just the purity of old-vine fruit, creamy tannins, ample concentration and a bright, vibrant—and long—finish. With its combination of intensity and tension, it should drink well for a decade or more.

The 2016 Gigondas from Xavier Vignon kicks off with a spicy touch of clove and cracked pepper, then eases into black cherry fruit, a full-bodied, supple mid-palate and a long, creamy finish with just a touch of warmth. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah that was raised mostly in concrete tank, the 2012 Gigondas offers up classic Gigondas style in its dried spices, cedar, exotic wood and sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit. Medium-bodied, supple and textured, it can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 7-8 years.
