The Cantina Kaltern 2019 Alto Adige Merlot Riserva Lasón (with 30,000 bottles made) is a bright and fragrant expression of this international grape with pretty aromas of wild berry, blueberry, mint, mountain herb and sweet potting soil. The wine shows a mid-weight style with firmness and good freshness, and you recognize the cool-climate alpine fruit, especially in this balanced vintage. It ages in barrique for 12 months (with 25% new oak).

Cantina Kaltern shows great focus on the Merlot grape with this set of new releases. Their 2018 Alto Adige Merlot Riserva Lasón, with 30,000 bottles released, is super soft, plush and velvety with lots of dark cherry, plum and dried peach. There is a sweet and supple side to the wine that overtakes the savory side that is normally shaped by the oak aging. That plump primary fruit underlines the fact that this is a very vintage-driven wine. Richness and softness are the two main takeaways here.
