The Torre Mora 2019 Etna Rosso Scalunera shows medium dark concentration with dark berry fruit, spice and campfire ash. The fruit aromas are expressed with pretty vertical lift and intensity, but the bouquet is also signed by evident oak toast and smoke. This adds weight and texture to the palate. Scalunera ends with soft notes of cumin, cardamom and black pepper.

The 2016 Etna Rosso Scalunera (with fruit from the Rovittello vineyard) offers more depth and width than the last time I tasted this wine (which was the 2013 vintage). There are sour berry aromas with pressed rose and crushed stone. All those volcanic characteristics go humming along, giving the wine good determination and delivery. This is a compact wine in terms of mouthfeel with medium length and powdery tannins. The blend is 97% Nerello Mascalese and 3% Nerello Cappuccio, and the wine is aged mostly in botte grande with a smaller part barrique. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

The 2013 Etna Rosso Scalunera opens to a slightly cloudy appearance and a dark garnet color. The nose is rustic and wild with dried current, cassis, cinnamon, juniper berry and dusty volcanic ash. The wine comes together in the mouth with a greater sense of balance, thanks to its power and freshness. Fine tannins spread evenly over the palate. This red is 95% Nerello Mascalese with 5% Nerello Cappuccio.
