The Tenuta di Castellaro 2020 Bianco Pomice is a blend of 60% Malvasia delle Lipari and 40% Carricante, and only the Carricante sees some brief time in barrique. The Malvasia ages on the fine lees in stainless steel. This estate has a vineyard on the island of Lipari. With 12,000 bottles released, Pomice is extremely expressive and bright, flaunting all those deeply volcanic tones of mineral, ash and crushed pumice stone after which this bottle is named. Crisp white flowers add a fragrant touch to the bouquet, but you'll also get hints of caper and wild anise.

I love the contemporary labeling of this wine that depicts what looks like giant pumice stones against a white and light blue background. The Tenuta di Castellaro 2019 Bianco Pomice is a blend of Malvasia delle Lipari and Carricante (that is partially aged in oak). It shows a bright golden hue with some distant greenish highlights. The bouquet is redolent of sweet honey and yellow roses, and although the overall effect is quite fragrant and floral, that mouthfeel brings on a dry and linear style that makes for a nice contrast. It's as if mountain flowers meet the sea shore. Production is 12,000 bottles.

I always look forward to tasting this wine because it never fails to offer an unmistakable signature of the white volcanic stones that mark this special territory on the island of Salina. You can smell the sulfur rock and the crushed pumice stone. The 2018 Bianco Pomice is a tight and crisp white wine with loads of salty, mineral flavors. The presentation is simple and streamlined, but the wine is absolutely unique and special no matter what. The wine is a blend of 60% Malvasia delle Lipari (fermented in stainless steel) and 40% Carricante (aged and fermented in oak). Some 15,000 bottles were produced.

The 2017 Bianco Pomice is a delightful white wine with an extremely graceful and fast-footed bouquet. You get lots of little detail here with white fruit, citrus, crushed stone and powdered oyster shell. The wine is streamlined and tight in terms of mouthfeel with a direct, sharp and beautifully focused approach. Salty mineral tones characterize the tonic and fresh finish. I just love this crisp and light style of white wine. The blend is 60% Malvasia delle Lipari (in stainless steel) and 40% oak-aged Carricante. Some 15,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Bianco Pomice is a blend of 60% Malvasia di Lipari and 40% Carricante. Only the Carricante is aged in neutral oak for six months with lees contact and frequent stirring. Some 12,000 bottles are made. This wine opens to a perfumed and almost soapy set of aromas with lavender, honey and peach blossom. There is a strong mineral vein at the back that very much reflects the idea of pumice stone after which this wine takes its inspiration. The mouthfeel is soft, medium-bodied and generous.
