The 2008 Carodorum Seleccion was made from 100% ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines over 100 years of age. The wine spent 18 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it surrenders a lightly roasted bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, tar, licorice, truffle, violets, and blackberry. Round, ripe, and intense (but not over the top), this is a well-proportioned behemoth along the lines of an all-pro left tackle. The 2007 Seleccion is 100% ungrafted Tinta de Toro from 100+-year-old vines. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it exhibits a compelling nose of pain grille, graphite, tar, espresso, violets, and blackberry. Voluminous, concentrated, and structured, the wine is packed with fruit and demands 4-6 years of cellaring. It has impeccable balance and when fully formed, my score is likely to appear conservative. The opaque purple-colored 2006 Seleccion was sourced from 100+-year-old vines and aged for 18 months in new French oak. The nose gives up aromas of toasty new oak, smoke, mineral, violets, blackberry, and licorice. Thick and rich on the palate, the wine is dense, tightly wound and very promising. Give this layered, lengthy effort 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it from 2015 to 2031. Carodorum is a small 16 hectare estate located in a region where phylloxera has never taken hold.
