Here's a terrific taste of Trentino's versatile Teroldego grape. The 2015 Teroldego Rotaliano Vigilius shows rich concentration and a dark, inky appearance. This full-bodied wine is packed tight with black fruit aromas that span from black cherry and plum to cassis and dried blueberry. Spice and toast appear at the back. It is aged in new barriques for 12 months with a few months in tonneaux. Part of the wine is aged in Clayver vessels, which are small containers made with a gray porcelain-like material. Bottle production ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 units per year.

Well-spiced and aromatic, this sleek red shows light grip from tannins and tangy acidity framing flavors of black currant, mandarin orange peel, star anise and dried thyme. Compared to De Vescovi Ulzach's base Teroldego, the 2012 Teroldego Rotaliano Vigilius sees more oak. The wine is aged in French barrique and tonneaux for up to 18 months. The characteristic bitterness you get with this indigenous grape has been somewhat softened as a result. The bouquet is rich and dense with red cherry, tobacco and spice. In the mouth, the wine is tightly textured and crisp with some sourness on the close. Vigilius has the acidity for a slow bottle evolution.

Layers of smoky mineral, black licorice, mocha and medicinal herbs underscore the crushed plum and blackberry fruit in this elegant and well-knit red. Light tannins show on the spiced finish.
