Crushed stone, black olives and purple raspberries feature in Farge's 2019 Saint Joseph Terroir de Granit. From 60-year-old vines in Saint-Jean de Muzols and Vion, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, yet vibrant and balanced, with a long, mouthwatering finish lined with fine-grained tannins. It should improve for a year or two and then drink well for up to a decade, perhaps longer.

Tasted from 2016 and 2017 barrels, Farge's 2018 Saint Joseph Terroir de Granit is really ripe and plush, yet it still shows elements of granitic restraint to its opulent black cherry fruit. It's full-bodied and supple yet with great focus and a long, silky finish.

With just a small proportion of what Thomas Farge calls "newer" oak (one to four years) and the rest older oak, the 2017 Saint Joseph Terroir de Granit is more about the fruit and the terroir than the élevage. Black olives and black cherries balance each other out nicely, made more complex with the addition of some gentle herb accents. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated yet silky, with a long finish that echoes of black tea leaves. It should drink well for a decade or so.

Farge's use of stem inclusion (60% in this cuvée) and older oak allows the kinkiness of Syrah to shine. The 2016 Saint Joseph Terroir de Granit features violets, pepper and exotic herbal notes, all layered over expressive raspberry fruit. It's full-bodied, creamy and lush without going over the top—a generous, pleasure-giving wine that shows length and elegance on the finish.

I really wanted to like this wine more, because the 2015 Saint Joseph Terroir de Granit kicks off with exciting notes of violets and black tea alongside fresh, herbal-stemmy notes. It's medium to full-bodied and supple, but I also detected what seemed like pickle juice flavors that I couldn't fully wrap my head around.
