The 2010 Turo de les Abelles is a 50/50 blend of Garnacha and Syrah from a 25-year-old single vineyard on extremely calcareous soils. The nose is quite marked by the oak aging with plenty of smoky and spicy notes and some lactic overtones that need to calm down. The palate is round, full, with fine-grained tannins, powerful but elegant, with a slightly drying finish. It has some rusticity but has a marked personality and great fruit depth, so it should age well in bottle. Give it one more year to get a better integration of the oak and drink over the next five. Drink 2015-2020.
Finca Viladellops was one of the surprises in the tasting of Penedes wines, a great discovery and a name to follow. The wines are not cheap, but the quality is very good.
