The 2015 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roi from Laurent Juillot is superb, offering up a lovely bouquet of ripe cherries, wild berries, rich soil and incipient notes of game bird that has hardly budged since I tasted it from barrel in October 2016. On the palate, the wine is supple, deep, and medium to full-bodied, with a lovely chassis of fine tannin and the amplest core of fruit of all the domaine's 1er crus. From a parcel planted in 1932, the domaine's smallest holding, Juillot formerly bottled this exceptional wine exclusively in magnum, but now opts to release it in regular bottles too. It's well worth seeking out in either format.
