A pure expression of Merlot, the Campo al Pero 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Dedicato a Vittorio comes from a site with mixed alluvial soils located just above sea level at 45 meters in elevation. With vines planted between 1999 and 2002, it shows nice layering with black fruit, tobacco, ripe cherry and sweet spice. Ripe Merlot sensations play softly in the background with the oak tones that stand out now. As the wine evolves, I'm curious if the fruit will wake up or fade out. This is a production of 1,800 bottles.

Dedicated to the estate's paternal figure Vittorio Cerbaro, this wine represents a special selection of Merlot from the family vineyard. The Campo al Pero 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Dedicato a Vittorio is a velvety rich expression with dark fruit, black cherry and plum. Those primary tones are presented with freshness and energy. Indeed, I am happily surprised with these results given the often flat and overripe results of the early-ripening Merlot grape in this scorching hot growing season. That balance and freshness is expertly underlined by this newcomer wine, perfect for a fatty rack of lamb. Sadly, only 650 bottles were made.
