The Podere Conca 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Agapanto is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Ciliegiolo. The wine is fermented in cement and aged in second and third-hand barrique and tonneaux. This softer oak regime allows for bright primary intensity with dark cherry, plum and light spice. With 18,000 bottles released, the wine is born in a three-hectare vineyard site with a mix of soils, including sand, stone and iron-rich clay, at a breezy 50 to 100 meters in elevation

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Ciliegiolo beautifully hones in on a sense of place. I think that the Ciliegiolo component (measured at just 15% of the blend) makes a lasting impression by contributing very energetic and lifted cherry aromas that almost completely define the fragrant bouquet of the Podere Conca 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Agapanto. The wine feels as if it were made in the cooler Chianti Classico climate located further inland. The two Cabernet grapes add ample substance, texture and power. There are some soft oak tannins and end notes of cinnamon and campfire ash. Some 10,000 bottles were made and you get solid value.

The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Agapanto entices with notes of cherry liqueur and PEZ, with some powdery chalk. There are earthy notes as well, with hummus or potting soil. There is a pleasant harmony to this wine, a nice sense of balance and freshness. This is an encouraging start for a budding estate in Bolgheri. Some 5,000 bottles were made. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Ciliegiolo.
