Voge is now making two cuvees of Cornas - his Cuvee Barriques, which is aged in small new oak casks, and his Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, made from 75-80 year old vines. The 1990 Cornas-Cuvee Barriques is surprisingly refined and soft for a Cornas, but the new oak has tamed some of the rusticity and harsh tannins that the Syrah planted on the roasted slopes of Cornas can possess. It offers up aromas of smoky, roasted, black fruit combined with scents of toasty new oak. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied and generous, with excellent ripeness, a supple, smooth texture, and a moderately long finish. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
