With only 1,500 bottles produced, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape les Larmes Papales will be tough to find. From 100-year-old Grenache grown on la Crau (Ouest), vinified partly in demi-muids and aged entirely in them, it offers up intriguing scents of hickory smoke, cherries and red raspberries. There's more concentration here than in Benedetti's regular cuvée, plus complex oak notes and more tannins, yet this wine doesn't lose the essential elegance that is the hallmark of the vintage here. Lovely stuff.
