Wilder and more exotic than the quintessentially elegant Bonnes-Mares, the 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with notions of dark wild berries, warm spices, rich soil tones, rose petals and incense. Full-bodied, deep and dynamic, with a concentrated core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and tangy acids, it concludes with a long, elegantly carnal finish. Indeed, I was taken aback by just how good this wine is.

The 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is extraordinary, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark wild berries, peony, juniper, rich spices, dark chocolate and grilled squab, the nuances of its bouquet alone meriting a paragraph of notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and complete, its satiny tannins cloaked in a deep core of sappy fruit, its finish long and penetrating. This is a magical Mazis that is evocative of the domaine's 2010.

Deeper pitched and more brooding than the ethereal Bonnes Mares, the 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru exhibits a sapid bouquet of wild black fruits, grilled meat, rich forest floor and violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and complete, with massive depth and concentration that largely conceals its framing of fine-grained tannins, concluding with a long, savory finish. While it's more powerful and muscular than the d'Auvennay Bonnes Mares, this is nonetheless an elegant Mazis that carries its considerable substance and intensity with effortless grace.

This offers graphite, mineral, cherry, spice and tobacco notes. More linear and focused than the Bonnes Mares, remaining very taut and long on the aftertaste. The 2010 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is thrilling—and one of the finest young reds I've tasted from Domaine d'Auvenay. The wine soars from the glass with a captivating bouquet of dark wild berries, incense, sweet spices and violets, mingling with notes of dark chocolate and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and searingly concentrated, with its fine-grained, chalky tannins concealed in an ample core of fruit, both more brooding and more fleshy than the d'Auvenay Bonnes-Mares. The finish is long and intense. While it's already a striking experience, forget it for another 6 or 7 years to experience all its plenitude.
