As for the excellent 2011 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux, this wine is an unusual blend of 50%, 25% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and some old vine Carignan, which give the wine loads of strawberry and floral notes as well as some hints of loamy soil in a medium-bodied, elegant and complex Provencal style. It should drink nicely over the next year. This is one of the better-known estates in the Southern Rhone, owned by the Richard family of Chateau La Nerthe. From a superior vintage, the 2010 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux is ripe and medium to full-bodied, and has 25% Syrah mixed in with the Grenache and old vine Carignan. It exhibits greater depth, with more steak tartare, blackberry, acacia flower and floral notes. The 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux is the wine to buy. There are about 5,000 cases of this blend of 55% Grenache, 22% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Carignan. It is a seductive, light to medium ruby-hued effort revealing delicious as well as charming, seductive black cherry fruit infused with hints of Provencal herbs and earth.
