The Dragon 2006 Cotes de Provence Cuvee Saint-Michel – matured in older barriques – is composed of roughly equal parts Syrah and Cabernet, with a smidgen of Grenache. (The blend varies widely from year to year.) Cooked blackberry, cassis, prune, and resinous herbs scent the nose and fill a lush, admirably smooth palate. Notes of fennel, parsnip, and roasted meats add to the complexity of this wine’s rich finish. A superb value, the 2001 Cotes de Provence Cuvee St.-Michel has a spicy, grapy, plummy nose. An extroverted, fruit-forward, lush effort, it coats the palate with loads of plump, sensual layers of black cherries, blackberries, and plums. While it is not a thought provoking, complex wine, it delivers hedonistic pleasure. This sexy offering would make a magnificent accompaniment to an herb-covered grilled steak... Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine exhibits a splendid dark ruby/purple color, an intense, sweet, licorice, herb, and blackcurrant bouquet, medium body, soft tannin, decent acidity, and a long finish.
