The Ladoix Les Corvees is more structured than the Ladoix, with more concentration and ripeness, an attractive, open-knit, vanilla and black-cherry-scented nose, a rich, concentrated, medium-bodied personality, and a long, lush finish with light to moderate tannin. It will drink well for 5-8 years. In 1993, the Cornu family, in what are usually difficult appellations, admirably succeeded in turning out harmonious, sweet, richly fruity wines that possess the stuffing necessary to stand up to the vintage's tannin. Moreover, Cornu's offerings include some excellent values. Except for Cornu's Corton Les Bressandes, his vineyard holdings are in modest appellations. Nevertheless, he turns out better and better wines by keeping yields moderate and not overly processing the wines. Recent vintages have included strong efforts in 1989 and 1990. I have rarely tasted a Ladoix as good as Cornu's 1990 Ladoix-Les Corvees. It is made from a 40-year old parcel of vines with a full southerly exposure. While knowledgeable readers may be skeptical of the wines from this appellation, as they tend to be hard, astringent, and compact, this is a knock-out example from the 1990 vintage. The color is saturated, and the nose offers up aromas of roasted red and black fruits, spicy oak, and herbs.
