The all-destemmed 2019 Cotes du Rhone mixes cherries and black cherries with delicate hints of dried herbs on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is quite firm and structured, with a soft dusting of tannins on the finish. To me, it's very much a wine to pair with rare beef or lamb off the grill.

Jamet's 2018 Cotes du Rhone is 100% Syrah from Ampuis. It boasts the seductive floral and fruity aromas of the IGP Syrah—violets, blueberries and raspberries—but with a bit more weight and texture. It shows remarkable purity in a medium to full-bodied, velvety wine, with flavors that linger elegantly on the finish. It really is a baby C?te R?tie, yet it's capable of putting some C?te R?ties to shame. Good thing, as the price for the 2016 (a lesser vintage) is creeping up past $50 in the United States.

Slightly bigger, richer and riper than the IGP Syrah, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone is medium to full-bodied, creamy and supple, with similar notes of crushed stone, a fumé-like character. But it also has blackberries, black olives and hints of espresso. It finishes silky and long. Jean-Paul Jamet points out that it comes from schist soils identical to C?te R?tie but from younger vines. Like the IGP, it's destemmed and aged in old barrels.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone comes from Syrah vines grown just outside C?te R?tie and spends up to a year in older oak prior to bottling. It's slightly more concentrated than the straight Syrah IGP (which comes from young vines), offering medium body, a plump, succulent mouthfeel and notes of cherries, violets and tapenade. It should drink well for 4-5 years.
