The finest wine in this portfolio is the 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages. Made from 100% Grenache, and cropped at a remarkably low 17 hectoliters per hectare, this stunning wine could easily stand up to the top Chateauneuf du Papes. Fresh acidity gives razor-like focus to the sumptuous black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, smoked herb, and incense notes. An inky/purple color, full body, and a voluptuous texture result in a shockingly good Cotes du Rhone-Villages. It should drink well for 7-8 years. As I have written in the past, this biodynamically farmed estate is a treasure-trove of excellent as well as value-priced wines. The 2001 Cotes du Rhone-Villages (100% Mourvedre) will undoubtedly be given a specific name before its release. A broodingly backward, inky purple-colored offering, it reveals abundant quantities of Mourvedre's blueberry, mineral, mushroom, and tree bark notes. More austere and intellectual than its siblings, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring and should drink well for 14-15 years. As evidenced by these tasting notes as well as those from the 2000s and 1999s, this is an extraordinary offering, bottled without fining or filtration.
