The rich, concentrated 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Rasteau 1921 aged in demi-muids and finished in concrete. From a vineyard planted in 1921, it's 90% Grenache, with the remainder Mourvèdre and Carignan. Deep and dark, it offers notes of plums, blueberries and mocha, a full-bodied, supple mouthfeel, and a long, licorice-tinged finish. It should drink well for a decade.

A good, not great vintage for this cuvee, the 2014 Cotes du Rhone Villages Rasteau 1921 is mostly Grenache, yet incorporates 7% Mourvèdre and 3% Carignan. Possessing elevated acidity, fine tannin and medium-bodied richness, it has classic Rasteau minerality, floral and darker berry fruit characteristics. I suspect a year or two in bottle will do it good and it should have a decade of longevity.

Up with the top wines in the vintage, the 2013 Rasteau Cuvee 1921 comes from the oldest vines on the estate (planted in 1921) and checks in as a blend of 90% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre and 3% Carignan. Already in bottle, it offers fabulous black raspberry, white pepper, incense and hints of leather. Full-bodied, with an open, sexy and layered style, it bucks the vintage stereotype and will dish out tons of pleasure over the coming decade.

The 2012 Rasteau Cuvee 1921, which is almost all Grenache, looks to be just as good and has remarkable polish and elegance in the appellation. Exhibiting perfumed notes of sweet raspberry, licorice, mineral and tinges of chocolate, this full-bodied, intense, seamless and hedonistically-styled effort will drink well for upward of a decade. If you get a chance to grab a couple bottles, don’t miss it. One of the leading southern Rhone estates for value is the Domaine Les Aphillanthes, which is run by Helene and Daniel Boulle. Even better and one of the wines of the vintage, the spectacular 2011 Rasteau 1921 is comprised of 90% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre and 3% Carignan, with the Grenache coming from vines planted in 1921. Offering up a stunning bouquet of black raspberry, licorice, spring flowers, underbrush and lavender, this medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet substantial 2011 has gorgeous overall balance, solid mid-palate depth and sweet tannin that comes through on the finish.
